Building Permits
The City of Springfield requires a permit for most construction-related work. Permits are needed for new construction, demolition, and any alteration, addition, repair, or renovation beyond basic cosmetic changes, such as painting.
Separate permits are required for, but not limited to:
- Residential projects (including reroofing, interior and exterior renovations, decks, and steps)
- Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC)
- Electrical work
- Gas piping
- Demolition
- Commercial construction (including reroofing)
- Fire detection and fire suppression systems
- Temporary and permanent signs
- Swimming pools deeper than 36 inches
- Moving a building or structure
All permit applications must be submitted online through the CityWorks portal.

Work completed without the required permits may result in financial penalties, stop work orders, and/or orders to remove unauthorized work or installations.
