City of Springfield Awarded $75,000 for Salt Brine Equipment to Protect Waterways
The City of Springfield has been awarded a $75,000 grant through the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s H2Ohio Chloride Reduction Grant Program, funding the purchase of a high-performance municipal salt brine maker. The goal is to reduce winter road salt runoff and better protect the Rock Run and Mad River watersheds.
This investment supports Springfield’s ongoing commitment to smart winter road maintenance that prioritizes both public safety and environmental stewardship.
The grant, part of Governor Mike DeWine’s H2Ohio initiative, helps communities across Ohio reduce chloride pollution from road salt—a common source of water quality degradation in winter months.
With this funding, Springfield is investing in the Henderson BrineXtreme Advantage, a professional-grade brine maker designed specifically for municipal use. This system will allow the City to produce salt brine at a rate of up to 7,500 gallons per hour, using either treated or untreated rock salt. Its stainless steel tank ensures long-term durability, while a sloped floor and large clean-out doors make regular maintenance easy and efficient.
The salt hopper holds over 4.5 cubic yards of material, and the integrated control systems will help operators calibrate brine production with precision. With its rugged construction and high-volume output, this equipment gives Springfield a reliable, long-term solution for reducing salt use during winter operations—helping to protect both public safety and the health of local waterways.
