Work involves removing, trimming, and planting trees in city right-of-ways, and public properties. Work also involves landscaping duties and mixing and applying pesticides. Tree trimming frequently requires working from ladders, climbing trees, or working from saddles or a bucket on an aerial bucket truck at extended heights. Work also requires working outdoors for extended periods of time in a variety of weather conditions. Employees in this classification may also serve as a crew leader. Employees will operate chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders, front-end loaders, backhoe, auger trucks, and dump trucks with snow equipment. Employees will plant trees by digging holes with shovel, auger trucks, or backhoe, properly placing trees in holes, fertilizing and watering trees, attaching guying wires and stakes, and pruning and wrapping trees. Employees will also operate self-propelled front and rotary mowers, push mowers, and weed-eaters, in the mowing and maintaining of cemeteries, roadsides, boulevards, embankments, etc. Employees will also landscape areas by mulching, weeding, fertilizing, spraying herbicides and pesticides, grading, sodding, seeding, aerating and planting shrubs, ground covers, and flowers. This position will also operate snow and ice control trucks as needed to supplement the Street Maintenance division. Will also perform related work as assigned.
This position requires graduation from high school or equivalent, preferably supplemented by coursework or training in arboriculture, and some experience with the safe trimming, planting, and removal of trees, or equivalent. This position requires knowledge of the tools, materials, and methods for safely and effectively trimming, planting and removing trees; the ability to operate vehicles in a safe manner; the ability to perform manual labor work in lifting and carrying tree limbs and construction materials; ability to work out-of-doors for long periods of time in a variety of weather conditions, including rain, snow, ice, heat, and humidity; ability to work safely from ladders, ropes and saddle, and aerial bucket trucks; ability to work in confined spaces, such as vaults, pits, manholes, trenches, and tunnels; ability to wear and operate life safety devices, face masks, safety belts and harnesses and other related equipment; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, co-workers, and the general public. This position also requires possession of a valid Ohio Class A CDL, with tanker and air brake endorsements and possession of a valid Ohio Department of Agriculture Commercial Applicator’s license for herbicides and pesticides, as applicable to this position.
