SPRINGFIELD— The Springfield Police Division is thrilled to announce the forthcoming implementation of Body Worn Cameras (BWCs) for its officers, marking a pivotal moment in the pursuit of transparency, accountability and community trust. The introduction of BWCs is designed to bolster the safety of Springfield Police Officers and the citizens they serve, fostering an environment of trust and responsibility. Over the next several weeks, training will be provided to Officers relative to the use of BWCs and the public will begin to see the cameras worn by Officers as a part of their uniform.
The decision to adopt Body Worn Cameras is the result of extensive research, consultation with stakeholders like the Community Police Advisory Team and the Ohio Collaborative, as well as, collaboration with both the Police Patrol Officers Union (SPPA) and the Command Officers Association (SCOA).
Key Benefits of Body Worn Cameras:
- Increased Accountability: BWCs serve as an objective record of interactions between officers and citizens, ensuring accountability and transparency in policing activities.
- Enhanced Officer Safety: The presence of BWCs can deter aggressive behavior, promoting a safer environment for officers and citizens.
- Building Community Trust: The use of BWCs demonstrates a commitment to openness and fairness, building trust between law enforcement and the community.
- Evidence Collection: BWC footage provides crucial evidence for investigations and legal proceedings, aiding in the pursuit of justice.
- Training and Evaluation: The recorded footage can be utilized for training purposes, enabling continuous improvement in policing techniques and tactics.
The purchase of Body Worn Cameras is a significant investment made possible through the receipt of a Body Worn Camera Grant ($162,586) from the State of Ohio as well as through local dollars for a total purchase of nearly $400,000. The City of Springfield recently received a second grant from the State of Ohio Body Worn Camera Grant to assist in hiring an additional staff person to assist with the program.
The Springfield Police Division remains dedicated to fostering a positive working relationship with both the SPPA and the SCOA, as well as all its officers. The department believes that the implementation of Body Worn Cameras is a significant step forward in maintaining public safety and upholding the principles of accountability and transparency.
